But that wasn’t the only instance where Shinn was allegedly mistreated by his bandmates. In his interview with Rolling Stone, Chris Shinn said that the problems started sometime before Live was scheduled to do a tour of Australia. He had told his bandmates several months in advance that he needed to attend to some family matters after a previously scheduled show in Las Vegas, and it was agreed that there would be no concerts booked in between Vegas and Australia. But according to Shinn, the band went ahead and accepted an offer to play in Arizona shortly before the Australian tour. He was also accused of not making it clear that his music is separate from that of his former band.

“This is the first Live interview that Ed and I have done together in a very, very long time,” guitarist Chad Taylor says, speaking to Rolling Stone from outside a Pennsylvania-area Starbucks. That hiatus, however, soon turned into a split, with Kowalcyzk pursuing a full-time solo career and the remaining members of Live regrouping with a new singer, Chris Shinn. Hynes stepped down as the CEO of United Fiber and Data in 2019 after he was charged with a litany of crimes related to his ex-girlfriend. That matter is still pending, and Hynes has denied any financial misconduct at UFD. Taylor says he pledged to never speak with Hynes again when it became clear the funds were never coming. Had he stuck with that pledge, the past decade of his life would have gone very differently. But a year or so later, he says, he got a call from Chad Gracey with Hynes on the line — begging for forgiveness, citing the stress of a recent divorce, and offering to make it right with Live. Soon, Taylor had agreed to “a few projects,” including real estate opportunities and the fiber-optic company.
